L GLUTATHIONE
Summary
L-Glutathione is studied as the cell's master antioxidant: it protects against oxidative stress, preserves redox balance, and participates in detoxification. Technically, it is the tripeptide GSH (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine), formed by glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, and constitutes the primary antioxidant defense in virtually all tissues.
What is it researched for?
- • Antioxidant defense and cellular redox balance
- • Mitochondrial and DNA protection
- • Phase II detoxification
- • Muscle recovery and fatigue reduction
Cycle and break
Mechanism of action
Central antioxidant defense
Directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintains intracellular redox balance, protecting proteins, lipids, and DNA from oxidative damage.
Mitochondrial and DNA protection
Preserves the integrity of mitochondrial membranes and participates in the repair of oxidative DNA damage.
Antioxidant regeneration and detoxification
Recycles vitamins C and E to their active form and participates in phase II detoxification pathways.
Scientific evidence
Redox balance: Its thiol (-SH) group is the most abundant reductant in the cell; its depletion is associated with cell damage in numerous models.
Cell survival: Oxidative stress models show greater cell survival in the presence of glutathione.
Muscle recovery: Studied for its role in muscle recovery and fatigue reduction.
