KPV
Summary
KPV is being researched for its role in gut health, systemic inflammation, and skin barrier function. Technically, it is the C-terminal tripeptide of the α-MSH hormone (positions 11-13); it is one of the most studied anti-inflammatory peptides, especially in the gut and skin, and also retains some of the antimicrobial activity of the α-MSH from which it is derived.
What is it researched for?
- • Intestinal inflammation
- • Skin inflammation and skin barrier
- • Systemic inflammation
- • Antimicrobial activity
Cycle and break
Mechanism of action
Inflammation modulation (NF-κB)
It is transported into the cell by the PepT1 system, stabilizes the IκBα protein, and limits the nuclear translocation of the p65 subunit of NF-κB, reducing the transcription of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1.
Gut-brain and skin axis
It also modulates MAPK cascades (ERK1/2, JNK, p38) and is being investigated in skin inflammation and neuroimmune communication of the gut-brain axis.
Scientific evidence
Intestinal inflammation: studied in colitis models (DSS and TNBS) with reduction of intestinal inflammation.
Skin inflammation: preclinical models support its local anti-inflammatory action.
