NAD+
Summary
NAD⁺ is studied for its role in cellular energy, DNA repair and molecular aging. Technically, it is the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, present in every cell and central to energy production, redox reactions and cell signaling; its levels decline with age, which has made it a key target in longevity research.
NAD⁺ is not the same as NAD
“NAD” on its own is the name of the molecule, which exists in the body in two forms: NAD⁺ and NADH. The “+” sign is not decoration: it marks the active form, the one the cell has free to work with.
This vial contains NAD⁺ as is: not NADH, nor a precursor such as NMN or NR that the body would first have to convert. That is why it is the most researched form, mainly for three reasons: energy (it is essential for producing ATP), repair (it fuels the enzymes that fix DNA) and aging (its levels fall over the years).
What is it researched for?
- • Cellular energy production (ATP)
- • DNA repair and sirtuin activity
- • Mitochondrial function and biogenesis
- • Molecular aging and longevity
Cycle and break
Mechanism of action
Driver of cellular energy
It acts as a cofactor in glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, transferring electrons in the oxidation-reduction reactions that generate ATP.
DNA repair and sirtuins
It is the substrate for sirtuins and PARP enzymes, which are involved in DNA repair, chromatin regulation and mitochondrial biogenesis.
Homeostasis and signaling
It regulates pathways of calcium homeostasis, inflammation and chromatin remodeling.
Scientific evidence
Cellular metabolism: It is one of the most widely used cofactors in cellular metabolism.
Aging: Its decline is associated with greater DNA damage, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in aging models.
NAD⁺ availability: Researched alongside modulators such as 5-Amino-1MQ for its role in NAD⁺ availability.
